College Day 2014-2015
Our school had the amazing choice of selecting a college to go visit, depending on whichever grade you're in. For 10th grade, we had the option of going to SDSU, Cal State Fullerton, and Cal Poly Pomona. I chose Cal Poly Pomona, because I am thinking of going to college to study interior design, and I found out that Pomona has an exceptional college for environmental design, which could potentially segway into interior design. Here is a reflection for college day.
Something that I really liked about Cal Poly Pomona was that it had eight colleges to choose from, so if my interests change while I'm in college, they could potentially offer me a lot of other opportunities. Another thing that I like about Pomona was that it was a public school (which I like mostly because of the insane prices of private schools). I also liked how this school was a "project based" school, just like HTHNC. Something that I didn't really like about Pomona was that because it is a public school, it is huge! There are over 22,000 students that attend Cal Poly Pomona. It isn't as bad though, due to the big campus. Another thing that I noticed was that the dorm rooms are really small, compared to some other colleges that I've gone and seen. It's located in Pomona, which I like because it's not too far away from home, but not too close at the same time. The student: faculty ratio is 36:1, so the access to professors is pretty good. Some factors that are important to me when choosing a college, is that I would like the college to have an "outside" college. For example, Cal Poly Pomona has a hospitality college, where you learn to do some of the more agricultural lifestyles, and they also have an equestrian college, which would be fun to study outside with the horses.
A school of study that I'm interested in, like I said before, is interior design, and Cal Poly Pomona has an environmental design college, which could open up some opportunities that are potentially in that same field. Another college that I wouldn't mind by attending would be an equestrian college, because I've always had a sweet spot for horses, and I know quite a bit about them already. Like I said before, Pomona has a great equestrian college, and they have lots of land and horses to do that "project based" learning. As for SAT scores, the average SAT score is around 460-570 for reading, and 490-620 for math. The cost to go to this school is ranges anywhere from about $6,350 (just tuition) to $22,571 (tuition, books, room and board, and other expenses) for an in-state student. Financial aid is available, through both the school and scholarships. An academic opportunity that is important to me is to be able to study abroad. One of my goals in life is to visit as many countries as I can, and what better way than to do it while being in school!
Once I'm in college, and I have a lot of free time on my hands, I hope to manage my time wisely (do homework, than have fun). For activities, I would probably join a few clubs, so that way it's an opportunity to meet a lot of other people. Another thing that I am hoping to do for a scholarship is to be on the soccer team. I've been doing soccer since I was four, and I've managed to improve myself exponentially throughout the years, so I keep working hard to get a scholarship for a college. It's really cool how they select roommates, because you basically have to fill out a questionnaire, and they match it to someone who is similar to you. Some of the questions are related to your sleep, study and cleanliness habits. Freshman are required to live on campus, except if they live within a certain mile radius of the school. Students can bring a car to the campus, to get around town, and stuff like that. Cal Poly Pomona offers men's baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's track and field, women's track and field, and women's volleyball. Pomona is pretty close to Disneyland, and a little further away from Six Flags, so there are obviously some really fun local activities to do with friends. I wouldn't mind going to this school, overall, but I do want to see some other opportunities for myself in other colleges.
